STREET MARKETS & SHOPPING
In the street markets of Turkey you can buy just about anything from copper and silver plates and jewellery, hand-made carpets, kilims, oriental spices, ceramic vases, paintings, antique jewellery, prayer rugs, leatherware, cotton clothing, tradional pottery and wood carvings, the typical sweet Turkish Delight, fruits and vegetables, a variety of local nuts and tapestries to the 21st century shops selling famous brands, names and logos t-shirts and bags. Haggling is expected and a must! Here the motto is “bargain, bargain and bargain again”, and real bargains can then be acquired.Shopping can be exhausting but you’ll have plenty of time in between to sit down and enjoy one of the several glasses of tea you’ll be offered – usually either the typical delicious Turkish tea or apple tea which foreigners seem to prefer as it isn’t as strong. There are shops specializing in selling spices and herbs, medicinal plants and drugs, dried fruits, teas, oils and essences, honeycombs and aphrodisiacs.
Shopping wouldn’t be complete without purchasing a nazar bonjuk – a good-luck, “evil eye” charm. Superstition has it that a person can cast an evil spell on another person so in order to prevent this, an evil eye charm is either pinned to a collar or sleeve, lapel or straps – especially to be seen worn by children. The evil eye charm is often hung above the entrance door to homes and offices, stopping any evil entering the building and often given as a present when one moves homes.· The glass blue eye charm looks at the “spell-caster” and hence wards off evil. It appears in many shapes and sizes but is always blue.
