Turkish Hospitality
Turkish people go out of their way to help you in any situation and always have time for a chat and a glass of tea with you. When you live in Turkey you meet this hospitality every day. On the dolmus, when the other passengers make sure the driver stops in the right place for you. On the streets, when passers-by give you directions and, in response to your tears of bewilderment, take you by the hand and walk you to your destination. In the Muslim world the welcomed guest is not only prized in himself, but conveys a special value on the host. You are offered numerous glasses of tea in the bazaars, in the local shops, in offices – wherever you go. Luckily the tea, served without milk, is served in tiny tulip-shaped glasses! When visiting, make sure you go on an empty stomach! Refusing to eat what your host puts down on the table is often taken as an offence – and the plates of delicacies whipped up from the kitchen never seem to come to an end. Be it Turkish pastries, fruit (which the host then starts to peel and cut up for you) or an endless stream of dishes which cost hours to prepare. Followed by yet another glass of tea or Turkish coffee. The Turkish warmth and generosity is genuine. They are interested in you from the moment they meet you and after a few minutes you will be asked the usual questions: Are you married? How many children have you got? Have you got any photos of your family? |
